African Drum & Dance

Most African dances originate from social or religious traditions. In most of Africa, history has been passed orally from generation to generation. This is one of the reasons that singing and dancing has been so important to communicate culture and background. Sometimes they tell the story of a people and other dances give moral "instructions" on how to live a good and harmonic life.

A couple weeks ago we enjoyed watching a group of youth performing some dances from the Volta region.

The 2 minute video clip is a condensed version of the hour program. We tried to give you a sample of the various dances they performed.

  1. Good job on the video. Their dances are always interesting. They are so different from the smooth dances of Polynesia.
