We’re on our own…

Friday, Jan 21st, was Petersen’s last day training us in the office. It was also their final day in Accra. This is a picture of us in the office and me at the desk that I will be using.

Below is a picture of the Africa West Area Presidency, Executive Secretary (me) and the Director of Temporal Affairs, Bro Greg Dunn on the far right.

These next few pictures are of us near the temple, office building and the ancillary building where we live.

Today we made our maiden voyage to the New Legon ward about 20 km Northeast of Accra where we have been assigned to help with the Primary and Young Men’s programs. It takes careful instructions to get there until we learn the route.

The next few pictures were taken along the route. There is a lot more we would like to take pictures of but we were busy making sure we were taking all the correct turns.

Family businesses are run from stands and small shacks next to the roads. A typical town intersection where some laws are observed; mostly its give and take. The most aggressive driver gets his way. The last picture shows a common sight. Many people carry their loads on their heads.

Signs are everywhere advertising everything. Note the wording on this taxi’s back window. It is not unusual to see religious statements on buses, taxis or trotros (minivans used as small buses).

During nursery and after church we took some pictures of the beautiful Ghanaian (pronounced Ga nay un) people.

The children are so cute. One little boy called me “Obruni” which means white person, when he wanted me to do something. I showed him my missionary badge and said “Sister Obruni!” He liked that. He was touching my arm, like he might never touched white skin. I touched his arm and said it’s different. One picture shows a bag hanging from a little girl’s mouth, which is a water sachet—basically a small plastic pouch filled with water. It is common, like a box with a straw in it in the states. And one shows a little girl with her “baby” tied to her back like they do here. The group shots are of Gordon with some of the young men, who also attend boarding school in the area. The boy in the middle is the son of one of the Area Seventy.

We hope you enjoyed the pictures. Until next time ...

  1. I have been waiting for some pictures of the locals! Very cool place. That drive to the ward house must have been interesting.
